Welcome to Parody and Invented Religions

Welcome to Parody and Invented Religions, the lightest course in the catalog, and one of the most thought-provoking.

In 2005, a young man wrote to the Kansas State Board of Education demanding that, if schools taught intelligent design, they also teach that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Millions laughed, and some joined. The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has since won the right to perform legal weddings in New Zealand. Hundreds of thousands of people have listed their religion as Jedi on national censuses, and hundreds of thousands more have been ordained online as ministers of Dudeism, a faith inspired by the film The Big Lebowski.

Are these religions? Jokes? Protests? Sometimes all three. This course studies parody and invented religions with the scholar Carole Cusack as guide, asking what they reveal about how religions begin, what the law counts as a religion, how satire protects freedom, and why human beings take play so seriously. Expect to laugh, and to think.
