Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in Alaska?

Alaska Statutes Section 25.05.261 allows marriages to be solemnized by a minister, priest, or rabbi of any church or congregation, among others. Alaska does not require religious officiants to register.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in Alaska

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records, or an Alaska court office.

  3. Check the dates

Waiting period: 3 days, beginning when the application is received. The license is valid for 3 months.

  4. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in Alaska with the couple present and at least one adult witness (the officiant cannot also be the witness). Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  5. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it. Have the witnesses sign where indicated.

  6. Return the license

Send the original marriage certificate to Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records within 7 days of the ceremony, and give each spouse a short-form certificate.

Good to know

Details and exceptions

  • Anyone 18 or older may instead be appointed a marriage commissioner for one wedding by an Alaska court, for a $25 fee.
  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
