Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in New York?

New York Domestic Relations Law Section 11 allows a clergyman or minister of any religion to solemnize marriages. Under Section 11-b, every officiant must register with the Office of the City Clerk before performing any ceremony in New York City.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in New York

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Register before the wedding

If the wedding is in New York City, register with the Office of the City Clerk before the ceremony. You do not need to register for weddings elsewhere in the state.

  3. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from the town or city clerk.

  4. Check the dates

Waiting period: 24 hours. The license is valid for 60 days.

  5. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in New York with the couple present and at least one witness besides you. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  6. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it. Have the witnesses sign where indicated.

  7. Return the license

Return the completed license to the town or city clerk who issued it within 5 days of the ceremony.

Details and exceptions

  • A 1989 New York appellate decision questioned an ordination obtained by mail. Clerks today generally accept ordained ministers, but bring your Certificate of Ordination in case you are asked.
  • New York also allows a one-day marriage officiant designated by a town or city clerk.
  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
