Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in Ohio?

Ohio Revised Code Section 3101.08 allows an ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation who is licensed to solemnize marriages to officiate. Under Section 3101.10, ministers apply for that license by presenting their credentials to the Secretary of State.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in Ohio

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Register before the wedding

Apply to the Ohio Secretary of State for a license to solemnize marriages before the wedding, including a copy of your Certificate of Ordination. Request a Letter of Good Standing ($30) from Confluence through the contact form. Allow time to receive it before you apply.

  3. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from the probate court.

  4. Check the dates

The license is valid for 60 days.

  5. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in Ohio with the couple present. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  6. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it.

  7. Return the license

Send the completed certificate to the probate court that issued the license within 30 days of the ceremony.

Details and exceptions

  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
