Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in Texas?

Texas Family Code Section 2.202 lists who may conduct a marriage ceremony in Texas. The list includes a licensed or ordained Christian minister or priest, a Jewish rabbi, and a person who is an officer of a religious organization and is authorized by that organization to conduct marriage ceremonies.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination. Texas does not require ministers to register with the state or with a county before performing a wedding.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in Texas

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple buys a marriage license from any Texas county clerk. The license can be used anywhere in Texas.

  3. Check the dates

At least 72 hours must pass after the license is issued, and the ceremony must take place within 90 days of the issue date.

  4. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in Texas with the couple present. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  5. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and county of the ceremony and your information, and sign it.

  6. Return the license

Return the completed license to the county clerk who issued it no later than 30 days after the ceremony.

Details and exceptions

  • The 72-hour waiting period does not apply to active-duty members of the military, to couples who complete the state's Twogether in Texas premarital course, or when a court waives it.
  • Texas law makes it an offense to knowingly conduct a marriage ceremony without legal authority. Make sure your ordination has been approved before you agree to officiate.
  • County clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Call or visit the clerk's website in the county that issued the license if you are unsure about anything.
