Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in North Carolina?

North Carolina General Statutes Section 51-1 allows an ordained minister of any religious denomination, or a minister authorized by a church, to solemnize marriages. North Carolina does not require clergy to register.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in North Carolina

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from the register of deeds.

  3. Check the dates

The license is valid for 60 days.

  4. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in North Carolina with the couple present and at least two witnesses. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  5. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it. Have the witnesses sign where indicated.

  6. Return the license

Return the license, with the certificate completed, to the register of deeds who issued it within 10 days of the ceremony.

Details and exceptions

  • In 1980, North Carolina's Supreme Court questioned a marriage performed by a minister ordained by mail. Many online-ordained ministers officiate in North Carolina today, but couples who want added certainty can also have a magistrate complete the legal marriage.
  • Failing to return the license on time can bring a $200 penalty and a misdemeanor charge.
  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
