Your authority

Can Confluence ministers officiate in Minnesota?

Minnesota Statutes Chapter 517 allows licensed or ordained ministers of any religious denomination to solemnize marriages, but they must first file their credentials with the local registrar of a Minnesota county. The county where you registered is recorded on each marriage certificate.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in Minnesota

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Register before the wedding

File a copy of your Certificate of Ordination with the local registrar of any Minnesota county before your first wedding. Ask the county what form and fee it requires.

  3. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from the county local registrar.

  4. Check the dates

The license is valid for 6 months.

  5. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in Minnesota with the couple present and two witnesses who are at least 16. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  6. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it. Have the witnesses sign where indicated.

  7. Return the license

File the completed certificate with the local registrar of the county that issued the license within 5 days of the ceremony.

Details and exceptions

  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
