Can Confluence ministers officiate in District of Columbia?

D.C. law allows ministers, priests, and rabbis to perform marriages once they are authorized by the Superior Court and registered with its Marriage Bureau. The couple names the officiant on their application.

Confluence Seminary of Sacred Studies formally authorizes each of its ordained ministers, in writing, to conduct marriage ceremonies. That authorization is printed on every Confluence Certificate of Ordination.

Step by step

Performing a wedding in District of Columbia

  1. Get ordained

Complete the $100 Ordination Orientation to receive your ordination. Keep your Certificate of Ordination and Minister ID Card where you can reach them.

  2. Register before the wedding

Apply to the D.C. Superior Court Marriage Bureau for authorization to officiate, using your Certificate of Ordination. Request a Letter of Good Standing ($30) from Confluence through the contact form. Allow time to receive it before you apply.

  3. Talk with the couple about the license

The couple gets a marriage license from D.C. Superior Court Marriage Bureau.

  4. Check the dates

    License validity: does not expire.

  5. Perform the ceremony

Lead the ceremony in District of Columbia with the couple present. Make sure the couple declares their intent to marry each other.

  6. Complete the license

Fill in the officiant section of the license with the date and place of the ceremony and your information, and sign it.

  7. Return the license

Return the completed license to the D.C. Superior Court Marriage Bureau as instructed on the license.

Details and exceptions

  • D.C. also offers a temporary officiant authorization for a single wedding, and couples may officiate their own marriage.
  • Clerks sometimes have their own questions or procedures. Contact the office that issues the license if you are unsure about anything, and confirm the current rules before every wedding, because laws change.
